Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be performing at the halftime for Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona.  The Arizona Republic reported that the selection is likely part of a new Super Bowl trend toward musical acts appealing to an older audience.

Since the now infamous wardrobe malfunction in 2004 involving Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, the annual sporting event has invited more traditional musical fare. Former halftime performances have included the likes of Paul McCartney, Prince, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Diana Ross, Phil Collins and Gloria Estefan.

The Republic said several other veteran rock groups were considered, including Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi and the Eagles.

While Petty will headline the halftime festivities, the game’s pregame entertainment has yet to be finalized.  Rumor has it we could see an appearance by “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks.

The XLII Super Bowl will be aired on February 3.
