Kiefer Sutherland has begun his prison sentence for a drink-driving conviction after surrendering to Los Angeles police on Wednesday. Sutherland was scheduled to turn himself in on December 21st, but due to the writer’s strike and probably nothing much to do, he made the decision to check in earlier.

The “24″ actor will serve out a 48 day sentence at Glendale City Jail, which includes spending Christmas, New Year and his birthday (December 21st) behind jail walls, where he’s expected to perform laundry and kitchen duties alongside other inmates.

Sutherland was sentenced to jail time after he was caught driving under the influence in September.  He was also handed 5 years probation and must complete an 18-month alcohol education program, which includes attending weekly therapy sessions for at least six months.

Keifer Sutherland settles DUI Case and FOX is very proud…seriously

Mr. Mister | Keifer Sutherland | Tuesday, 09 October 2007

Keifer Sutherland agreed to a complicated sentencing in his DUI case today. Kiefer will do 18 days for the probation violation, surrendering December 21. He will serve an additional 30 days for the current DUI and must complete that sentence by July 1.

The reason for this? To keep “24″ on schedule of course. Twentieth Century Fox and Fox Broadcasting were so proud of him that they released the following statement:

“Today our friend Kiefer Sutherland resolved his criminal case at the earliest opportunity. Kiefer made clear to us at the time of his arrest that his first concern was the welfare of those he worked with and that he intended to do whatever was necessary to prevent shutting down the show because of his situation. He told us that even if he had to sacrifice more time in custody in order to protect the show and the jobs of those who work with him, he would do so. From what occurred today, it is evident he is a man of his word. We wish him well and look forward to a long relationship with him.”

Wouldn’t it be nice if they issued press releases about how proud they are of people who DON’T get DUIs in the first place?
